This is a list of emails I have received in the past two weeks from various organizations. I compile them and post them as a service for those who would prefer to have one place to take action all at once.
International Campaigns
• More than 2 million children are enslaved in global sex trade, and without increasing resources to catch predators, the abuse and suffering of these children will never end. Alarmingly US tourists account for quarter of child sex tourists worldwide. Help give children the best possible start in life- ask Congress to increase resources to combat child sex tourism.
• Canada's annual seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. This year the Canadian government allowed fishermen to club and shoot more than 330,000 seals in the North Atlantic—almost all of them babies as young as 12 days—just to earn a few extra bucks by selling seal skins. Help save baby seals by signing the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood.
• There are only about 350 North Atlantic Right whales left on the planet, making them the most endangered of the great whales. Right now, 30 to 50 are facing death in the icy waters of Canada’s Bay of Fundy. Send a message to Canadian Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn urging him to delay opening the fishing grounds until the right whales have left the area.
• Japan recently launched its annual mass dolphin slaughter - allowing "fishermen" to round up and butcher tens of thousands of dolphins. According to The Ocean Project, every year, some 20,000 small cetaceans (some endangered) are killed or taken in these drives, some illegally. The animals include bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, spotted dolphins, Risso's dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, white-sided dolphins, and false killer whales. Help stop the hunts.
• In Beijing, the local government is using “rabies control” as an excuse to conduct a massive crackdown on the growing dog population in many Chinese cities. The “battle plan” for the crackdown is three-fold: 100% of dogs in Beijing vaccinated, 100% of dogs registered,100% of large dogs eliminated (killed). Urge the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to intervene.
National Campaigns
• The California-based Animali Farm is working hard to find good adoptive homes for the more than 100 foals and mares facing the November 30 deadline. • Imagine if all the news you saw on television, read in your newspaper and heard on the radio came from the same source. Sadly this is not too far removed from reality; eight of the largest media giants already own 90% of the media market. Making matters worse, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering weakening the rules on how many media outlets any one company can own. Ask the FCC to prevent big media from getting any bigger and to instead encourage more diverse, independent and minority ownership. Make a comment to the FCC.
• President Bush has nominated Eric Keroack, a man who believes birth control is "demeaning" to women, to head the Health and Human Services' family planning program. Sign the petition and say no to Keroack now.
• There are only days left for the U.S. Senate to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 1915)! The House of Representatives voted 263-146 on Sept. 7 to pass H.R. 503. Now it's time for the Senate to act by passing S. 1915, which is sponsored by Senators John Ensign (R-Nev.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.). Send a very clear message to Congress to pass a permanent ban on horse slaughter. Call your two U.S. Senators directly or call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
• Wyoming has declared war on wolves. State officials have filed a lawsuit to compel the federal government to remove as many as two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming. As many as 200 wolves and their pups could die. Help stop indiscriminate killing of Wyoming wolves before it starts.
• There are wild lands in America that are just too special to touch. The Bush administration is planning to litter them with 118,000 new oil and gas wells in an accelerated drilling plan that threatens one million acres of western public lands! Send an urgent message to the Interior Department.
• Under Clean Elections, qualified candidates who agree to forgo all private contributions and follow strict spending limits receive public financing for their campaigns, freeing them from having to chase campaign donations from big money special interests and lobbyists. Sign the petition to enact real campaign reform by passing the Clean Money, Clean Elections Act.
• Take Action Now! Send a message to the majority leaders of the 110th Congress and urge prompt action on solutions to global warming.
• In one of the most important environmental cases ever to come before the U.S. Supreme Court, climate change and the regulation of carbon dioxide emissions will be ruled upon by the nation's highest court for the first time. The case is Massachusetts vs. EPA, 05-1120. Essentially two questions are at issue: can the U.S. government's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulate CO2, and if it can, is it required to. The Clean Air Act mandates the EPA to regulate emissions from mobile sources that "cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare." With a decade at most to avert global warming catastrophe, tell the U.S. Supreme Court know carbon dioxide must be regulated by the U.S. EPA.
• Industrial agriculture is pressing Congress for a sweeping exemption from the federal Superfund law. Two bills pending in Congress — S. 3681, introduced by Senator Pete Dominici (R-NM) and H.R. 4341, introduced by Congressman Ralph Hall (R-TX) — would allow those responsible for manure mismanagement to escape cleanup responsibilities set out in the federal Superfund. Please send a message to your senators and congressmember today and ask them to oppose any riders that would exempt confined animal feeding operations from the Superfund law.
• Non-native plants and animals can damage the environment, endanger native species, and place a financial burden on affected communities. The emerald ash borer is a beetle, originally from Asia, that has killed more than 20 million ash trees in several U.S. states. If it spreads, it could eliminate all native ash species across the United States. Please call your senator or representative who is on the Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Agriculture to ask for their commitment to address this threat.
• Animal fighters involved in the brutal underground industry of dog fighting and cock fighting often make thousands of dollars in a single night. But when they illegally ship animals for fighting across state lines, a misdemeanor -- essentially a slap on the wrist -- is the only penalty they will possibly face. The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act would make trafficking in fighting animals a felony, with stiffer penalties. Urge current House Majority Leader John Boehner to bring the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act up for a vote now.
• America's Red Rock Wilderness Act, which proposes protection for deserving public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) across Utah, recommends 323,300 acres for wilderness protection within the Zion-Mojave region. In contrast, the draft Washington County Growth and Conservation Act would only protect roughly 93,000 acres of these BLM lands for wilderness, leaving over two thirds of deserving lands on the chopping block. Please take action to oppose this legislation.
