The terms environmental conservation and preservation are often used in the same light. Both have colonial roots dating back to the late 1800's and early 1900's, however they do have theoretical differences.
Conservationalism has European modernist traditions coming from scientific rationalism, economy and utilitarian philosophy. It is human centered, in that the idea is to conserve nature for future exploitation. In this theory man conquers, manages and controls the land. The science of forestry management would fall within the ideals of conservationalism.
Preservationism on the other hand, came from Americans who initiated the idea of protected zones. Inspiration also included ideas from the British Nineteenth Century romanticism and critique of industrialism. It came about as certain natural resources were recognized to be threatened from human exploitation. Within the preservation movement there is a desire to keep natural pristine environments away from human settlement. Preservationists also recognized the need to establish natural areas for recreation.
