As I was walking to town today I looked up in one of the trees and saw what I swore looked like an owl. It was very small though, only about 5 inches long, so I wasn't sure if it really was an owl. It starred at me for a while from the tree where I was able to get a good look at it. I was excited to see if I would find a picture of it in my wildlife guide when I returned home. The formal name in the guidebook is Ferruginous Pygmy-owl. I had also been surprised to see this owl during the day time, but the wildlife book confirmed that this owl is active during the day. I found a photo and description on owling.com where they call it a Costa Rican Pygmy-owl. The website says that their mating time is in March, which is just about now. Toot, toot.
