In six months of living in Costa Rica I have seen the Ctenosaur twice. Both times it has been on the road to the University for Peace which is lined with coffee plantations. I haven't had my camera with me, so I had to crop this image from my Costa Rica wildlife guide. Their habitat is low elevation wet and dry areas on Pacific slopes, often along Pacific beaches. They can be found on the ground or in trees and can be up to four feet long.
I wonder about the sustainability of these creatures living along the plantations with all of the pesticides they spray there. If the ground, air and bugs that they eat have pesticides, it surely impacts their health as well.
