By now the news that Al Gore and the IPCC won the 2007 Nobel Peace prize is slightly more than a week old, but I would feel remiss in not mentioning it on this site. The recipients are recognized "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change " In an October 12, 2007 email to recipients registered on Al Gore's website, he reminds us once again that, "The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level." See the IPCC response to the award.
The IPCC predicts that there will be an averagetemperature increase of 2 degrees (C) or 3.6 degrees (F) over the next century. However, it is important to understand that during a 30 year span from 1976-2006 the Northern Polar regions already increased temperature by this amount (see map). Thus, the change in these regions could very likely be higher than those numbers. At a 4 degree Celsius increase (7.2 F), more than 40% of species face extinction.
