This evening we had a powerful lightning storm for about an hour. Each time the lightning struck, I felt the need to duck as the thunder immediately followed (within 1 second). When you live on a mountain, you are closer to the storm than on flat land. There wasn't a lot of distance between me sitting inside my casita and the storm clouds above. I kept thinking the tin roof on the porch and the steel beams holding up the roof wasn't necessarily the best protection from the lightning.
The cat was smart. He ran inside the house and hid under the concrete benches for the kitchen table. The thunder was so powerful, at times I could feel the vibration on the ground under my feet. That is a sensation I haven't felt before!
This coming weekend we will be heading to visit the Arenal volcano. It is one of the most active volcanos in the world. There is a great photo on arenal.net of a lightning storm in the evening with the lava flowing off the volcano. The lava is apparently flowing to the west side of the volcano right now, which is the direction of where our hotel is so we should have a good view at night. Hopefully, I can get a video of the volcano to share online. That is of coarse, if there isn't a huge pyroclastic flow that covers us while we are there.

Amazing picture showing the beauty and power of nature.
